Tanzania Safari Tours Frequently Asked Queries

Explore essential insights on Tanzania safaris with our FAQs. Learn about the best travel times, wildlife viewing opportunities, and tips for maximizing your experience in Tanzania's renowned national parks.
When is the best time to see the great migration?
The great wildebeests migration starts and ends in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Depending on the time of the year you will be travelling you can see the migration in different locations in the Serengeti. If you are travelling between December and March, the migration is expected to be in the Southern Serengeti where it starts to migrate northward. In this time of the year the wildebeests give birth in the Southern Serengeti where they get green and full of nutrients pastures for the newborn babies and then they start to migrate northward following the rains pattern. This is what is known as a calving season in Ndutu. From April to May the migration will be around central Serengeti and nearby areas as by this time you will find rains in this area (if the weather doesn’t change), from June to mid-July the migration will be in the western Serengeti near Grumeti River as they continue their journey towards North. From mid-July to October the great wildebeest’s migration is expected to be in the Northern Serengeti (Kogatende) near Mara River where the river crossing happens. This is where the gnus cross Mara River and enter Kenya’s Masai Mara side and back to Tanzania as they head back to South Serengeti for giving birth again in Ndutu. So, you can see the migration in any time of the year only depending on when you are travelling and where you want to see them.
How many days should I consider for safari?
At Dismass Kili Experience, we organize safaris starting from a day trip onward. Depending on your ambition and safari goal we can organize for you a safari up to more than 10 days safari. For example, if your focus is to see the Great Migration Mara River crossing it will take you at least 8 days safari if you drive in and out and if you fly in and our 6 days. It also depends on your availability and time.
Which Parks do you recommend for Safari?
Each Park in Tanzania has its own characteristics which distinguishes it from other parks. We will usually suggest the appropriate park depending on the time of the year you are travelling. However, you can visit Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater at any time of the year.
What type of accommodations do you use for safari?
Depending on our clients’ preferences we have several accommodations options for our clients starting from Tented Camps, Tented Lodges, Hotels, Luxury Hotels and Luxury Tented Lodges. We cater for all our clients’ demands.
What kind of Safari Vehicles do you use for safari?
We use 4 x 4 Landcruiser open roof vehicles for all our safaris. Our safari vehicles are equipped with the mini fridge for a cold-water during game drive in the hot jungles of Tanzania, charging cables to make sure that your cameras and phones are standby for a unique and beautiful photo, radio calls in case of emergency in the middle of nowhere.
Do you do fly and flying out of the Parks safaris?
Yes, we do organize flying safari into and outside the National Parks. For example, one of our safari packages “The Kili Extension” is a flying safari package to Serengeti National Park after your Kilimanjaro climb starting from Arusha. We also do have Great Migration flying safari packages and we can also personalize the itinerary according to our clients’ preferences
Can we combine Kilimanjaro climb and safari? Which one should start?
Yes, it is possible to combine the Kilimanjaro climb and safari extensions. We recommend starting with the Kilimanjaro climb and then Safari there after because of the fitness level need for both expeditions. Kilimanjaro is more of strenuous activity which requires more energy than safari and getting time to relax after the climb would be an added advantage and an icing on the cake.
What are the includes and excludes for safari?
Usually, your safari package includes will depend on the clients’ requirements however, generally all park entry fees, 4 x 4 pop up open roof safari jeep with English speaking driver guide, accommodation and meals as per clients’ preference, Airport Transfers (if applicable) and applied taxes.
Where does the great migration start from?
The great wildebeest migration starts from Tanzania in the Southern part of the Serengeti National Park (Ndutu) where the gnus give birth from December to March every year due to the availability of the green and abundance pastures which has enough nutrients for the newborns to get all the required nutrients for them to start the journey Northward.
Is it worth doing a safari in low season? (April & May)
Many people consider the term “low season” as the time of the year people cannot travel for tourism purposes. But the reality in the field is different and many people do enjoy a lot when travelling in this time of the year. This is because in this time of the year very few people travel and if you travel you own the Park, and your game drive will be very flexible and comfortable. You will see animals exclusively and have enough time to enjoy the game as there will be not many safari jeeps around the given encounter. Even most accommodations are less crowded which means you will enjoy your stay exclusively. Most of the parks in time of the year are lush and travellers will enjoy fresh air and mouthwatering views of landscapes. Pricewise it is also a little bit cheaper travelling in this time of the year than any other time of the year. It is, therefore, worth travelling in this time of the year.
Which wild animals should I expect to see during safari in Tanzania?
Expect to see a lot of animals during your safari. Tanzania is a home to the big cats (Lions, Leopards & Cheetahs), the big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard & Rhino), it is the home to the only big mammal’s migration (The Great migration) on earth where wildebeests, zebras and antelopes in thousands move from Serengeti Tanzania to Masai Mara Kenya and back. Giraffes, hyenas, zebra, jackals, wild dogs and so many other animals without forgetting hundreds of bird species.
Do you recommend doing Southern Circuit Safaris or Northern Circuit and why?
Deciding of whether to go for Southern Circuit or Northern Tourism circuit depends on several aspects. If you want to see the great migration it is obvious that you will choose Northern Circuit but if you want to avoid crowds and see animals in a less crowded environments the Southern Circuit will be recommended. Most animals and excursions are found in both circuits and rest assured that you will enjoy your trip regardless of which circuit you choose.
How does the tipping works for the safari guide (s)?
Your Tanzania Safari Specialist will send you the tipping guideline for your driver guide/safari crew for you to prepare accordingly.
Are you a member of TATO?
Yes, we are an active member of Tanzania Association of Tour Operators.
How many safari vehicles do you have at DKE?
Our Safari Vehicles fleet consists of 5 Safari Jeeps (4x4 Open Roof Land cruisers) and 2 transfer vehicles.
How does the rescue work for safari?
All our safari vehicles are equipped with radio calls for easy communication while in the middle of nowhere. Drivers do contact their fellow driver guides via radio calls while in the field in case of emergence in remote area and they always assist on a rescue and/or contact our support team for the rescue. In case of breakdown and the vehicle cannot continue with safari we always act rapidly to replace the vehicle to make sure that your trip isn’t affected too much and mar your experience. We are always on our toes to ensure that your safari experience remain unforgettable.
