Kilimanjaro Rongai Route – 7 Days

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route – 7 Days

Day to Day Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. There, you’ll meet with your guide for a comprehensive briefing on the trek ahead, covering the route details, safety procedures, and a final gear check.

Day 2: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp (2,671m)
After breakfast, you’ll drive to the Rongai Gate on Kilimanjaro’s northern side, near the Kenyan border. The hike begins in fertile farmland and forested areas, offering scenic views and chances to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys and elephants. The ascent is gradual, and you’ll arrive at Simba Camp in the afternoon, where you’ll enjoy your first night under the stars on the mountain.

Day 3: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,600m)
As you continue, the forest thins out and gives way to the open moorlands. You’ll have fantastic views of Kibo Peak as you ascend. The trail is gentle but steady, with panoramic vistas of the Kenyan plains and Mount Mawenzi in the distance. The day ends at Kikelewa Camp, where you’ll have time to rest and acclimatize to the higher altitude.

Day 4: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m)
Today’s trek takes you closer to the striking Mawenzi Peak, with a steeper ascent than previous days. The landscape becomes more rugged, with dramatic views of Mawenzi’s jagged ridges. You’ll reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled beside a picturesque tarn (small mountain lake), where you can relax and take in the stunning surroundings.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut (4,700m)
After an early start, you’ll cross the lunar desert of the Saddle, a barren stretch of alpine terrain between Mawenzi and Kibo. The landscape is stark but fascinating, with few signs of life at this altitude. The trail leads you to Kibo Hut, where you’ll have an early dinner and rest before your summit push at midnight.

Day 6: Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and down to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Your final ascent begins around midnight. Trek through the cold, dark night, slowly but steadily climbing toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim (5,681m). After a short rest, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, where you’ll witness a breathtaking sunrise. After celebrating your achievement, descend back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned rest after a long and exhilarating day.

Day 7: Horombo Hut to Moshi
On your final day, you’ll descend through the moorland and lush rainforest, passing Mandara Hut before reaching the Marangu Gate. Here, you’ll collect your summit certificate, marking the completion of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and a relaxing evening at your hotel
