Kilimanjaro Machame Route – 7 Days

Day to Day Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you will meet your guides for a detailed briefing and gear check before your climb.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (3,010m)
The trek starts from Machame Gate, where you’ll enter the forest zone. Hike through dense, mossy trees and listen to the sounds of birds as you make your way to Machame Camp. The trail is challenging, but the scenic beauty of the rainforest will keep you motivated.

Day 3: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,845m)
The trail becomes steeper as you ascend through the moorland zone, characterized by heather and open landscapes. After several hours of trekking, you’ll reach the Shira Plateau and camp at Shira Camp, offering stunning views of Mount Meru and the valley below.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m)
Begin the day with a trek up to Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatization. The landscape becomes more rugged, with large rock formations and sparse vegetation. After reaching Lava Tower, you will descend into the Barranco Valley, where you will camp beneath the towering Barranco Wall.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m)
Today begins with a scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the Karanga Valley and surrounding glaciers. The trail then winds down into the valley and up to Karanga Camp, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m)
This shorter trek leads to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. Arrive in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day resting and preparing for the midnight summit push. Dinner is early, and you’ll sleep for a few hours before waking to begin your climb.

Day 7: Summit Day – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Down to Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Your summit push begins just after midnight. Slowly trek up to Stella Point and along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, where you’ll witness the sunrise from the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, begin your descent back to Barafu Camp, rest briefly, then continue down to Mweka Camp for your last night on the mountain.

Day 8: Mweka Camp to Moshi
Descend through the forest zone back to Mweka Gate. After a celebratory ceremony and receiving your certificates, you will be transferred back to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
