3 Days Mt. Meru Trekking

Day to Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha and Transfer to Momella Gate
Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be greeted by the Classic Guides Expeditions team. After a short briefing and preparation, you will be driven to Momella Gate (1,500 meters), the starting point of your trek in Arusha National Park. The first part of the trek takes you through a rainforest where you may spot wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and monkeys. You’ll trek for about 4-5 hours to reach Miriakamba Hut (2,500 meters), where you’ll spend the night.

- Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters
Day 2: Drive to Momella Gate and Trek to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, you will continue your trek to Saddle Hut (3,500 meters), a 3-4 hour hike. The trail ascends through the forest and then transitions into moorland, offering stunning views of Mount Meru’s peak and surrounding landscapes. As you near Saddle Hut, you’ll notice the barren alpine desert terrain. Saddle Hut is a great place to rest and acclimatize before the summit attempt.

- Elevation Gain: 1,000 meters
Day 3: Summit Day – Saddle Hut to Summit and Descend to Miriakamba Hut
Your summit day begins very early, around 2:00 AM. You will ascend from Saddle Hut to the summit of Mount Meru (4,566 meters), which takes 5-6 hours. The ascent is challenging but rewarding, as you pass through a rocky terrain and gain breathtaking views of the crater and surrounding valleys. Upon reaching the summit, enjoy the panoramic views before descending back to Saddle Hut for a quick rest. You will then continue your descent to Miriakamba Hut for the night.
- Distance: 5 km (to summit) + 12 km (descent to Miriakamba)
- Elevation Gain: 1,066 meters (to summit)
- Descent: 4-5 hours
Day 4: Final Descent to Momella Gate and Return to Arusha
After breakfast at Miriakamba Hut, you’ll begin your final descent to Momella Gate. This trek will take about 3-4 hours, and you’ll pass through lush forest, with a chance to see some wildlife on the way. Once you reach the gate, you will be transferred back to Arusha to celebrate your successful climb.
