Upon arrival in Arusha, you will be greeted by the Classic Guides Expeditions team. After a short briefing about your trek, you will be driven to Oldoinyo Lengai. The drive takes approximately 5-6 hours, and you’ll pass through the stunning Lake Natron area. After arriving at the base of Oldoinyo Lengai, you will have some time to relax, prepare your gear, and enjoy the surrounding landscape. Overnight stay at a local campsite or lodge near the base of the mountain.
You will begin your summit attempt in the very early hours of the morning, usually around 1:00 AM or 2:00 AM, to take advantage of the cooler temperatures. The climb involves ascending through steep slopes and rugged volcanic terrain, with sections of loose rock and ash. It’s a physically demanding climb, but the unique volcanic landscape and breathtaking views make it a rewarding experience.
After about 6-7 hours of trekking, you will reach the summit at around dawn. From the top, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the surrounding landscape. If the volcano is active, you may also see the lava lake or the venting of gases, which adds to the unique experience.
After spending some time at the summit, you will begin your descent back down to the base, which will take about 3-4 hours. You will return to your campsite or lodge to rest and enjoy a well-deserved meal.
After breakfast, you will begin your return journey to Arusha, where you will be dropped off at your hotel or the airport. You’ll have time to reflect on your successful trek up Oldoinyo Lengai, an adventure that combines physical challenge with breathtaking views and an unforgettable volcanic experience.
